FLSNY's DV Project for Farm Worker Women - What
We Do
FLSNY advocates conduct outreach to farm worker women 2 -3 nights
each week, meeting dozens of women each week to educate them about their
right to a home free from domestic abuse and free from sexual assault.
Most weekends, meetings are held with groups of farm worker women to
empower them and provide a supportive environment. The women are
given the domestic violence hotline number and the phone number to our
educators. Farm worker women become aware of their rights and the
meetings prove to be a safe place for the women to be open about their
domestic situation.
Types of Outreach:
General Outreach
- One aspect of General Outreach is visiting migrant labor camps and
other housing sites to disseminate information about FLSNY and the
services we provide. Within our primary outreach booklet there is
general information about domestic violence and sexual assault, which
includes the local toll-free hotline number and the state and national
DV/SA Hotline number.
- During general outreach we have the opportunity to identify where
women are living, so that we can plan a follow-up visit to the location
to talk directly with the woman/women living there.
- During general outreach we also talk about FWI(Farmworker Women’s
Institute), generally what it is about, and hand out a flyer that
includes contact information to call if they want more information or
are interested in attending an FWI meeting/event.
